When more than 23% domains on web are running on WordPress, it means the CMS is handling variety of contents. For example, with the help of amazing plugins like Events Manager or The Events Calendar, one can easily build an interesting events website. These plugins allow you to create and manage events from single panel and put the calendar anywhere on the page. But to utilize the available real estate of the page or sometimes above the fold area, it is better to put carousels or sliders to show multiple events at a time. Putting ongoing or upcoming events on front page or sidebar would be very effective and helpful for the viewers as well as the organizers.
In this tutorial, I will help you to create and embed a responsive events slider on WordPress site without much effort.
To add an event slider on WordPress site is a common requirement but one may ask for specific design and animation for the slider. Here are few examples and available plugins to achieve the same in no time.
Continuous Scrolling Events Slider
If the requirement is to put continuous scrolling events slider, Placid Slider is the best fit plugin for the scenario. It is well integrated to create and embed Upcoming events slider, Recently added events slider and Past Events Slider. Without any compromise with the performance, one can add a continuous scrolling events slider with Placid which runs the slider in loop.
Events Slider with Step Carousel
Fixed number of visible slides and one slide or set of slides scrolling horizontally in steps. This implementation of events slider looks really nice and one can achieve the same with Roster Slider WordPress plugin. Roster comes with 3 different skins to show the events in a beautiful way and is well integrated with Events Manager and Events Calendar plugins.
Large Image and Small Thumb Events Slider
Thumbel Slider is the best WordPress plugin to have events appearing with large image and a small thumb per slide. The highlighted thumb will appear in the large image and the details such as event date, venue and description will appear on the large slide or the carousel. This layout is also very easy to navigate.
Full Screen Events Slider
On front page or any featured page, if you want to show events in full screen, Cosmo Slider is the best suitable WordPress plugin for this purpose. With Cosmo Slider, you can also put a video as a background and the event text details will appear over the video.
3D Events Slider
Do you like to show the events with their details on a 3D Slider? Dbox Slider is the ready option for you with more than 50 setting options including Google Fonts availability and customization option for 3D effects.
Other Layouts for Events Slider
Apart from above listed designs and layouts, if you want to have an event slider with left navigation panel and right content panel, checkout the Pointelle Slider plugin. Also if you like to have events appearing in blocks, check Featured Slider which is again fully integrated with Events Manager and Events Calendar plugins of WordPress. All these sliders are fully responsive and well tested with the latest version of WordPress.
Expired Events inside the Slider
Sometimes you may need to show all the events which has expired or completed. The sliders listed in this article has an option to show only expired events auto fetched from the WordPress database. Very useful in creating an events archive page.
Free Plugins for Events Slider
Plugins listed in this article are premium and comes with prompt support and many other features apart from integration with event plugins. But if you are looking for a free WordPress slider, you can also checkout a plugin named POWr Events Slider.
Carousels are effective and there is no doubt about it. There may be some discussion or disagreement on page performance and slide click-through rate but believe me, it all depends on the slider plugin’s code and implementation. All SliderVilla sliders passed performance checks performed by many WP experts and you will find every penny worth for the sliders. Live or upcoming events or even the past events will look amazing if served inside a slider.
Sometimes you may like to have a slider with slides from a particular category. For example, to show all recent articles written under ‘Sports’ category. You may also think to have this ‘Sports’ category slider available in the sidebar or at the top of all articles related to Sports. It improves the site’s engagement as well as SEO for that article. With SliderVilla WordPress sliders, these requirements can be achieved without any effort. There is no need to add any code in functions.php or to have a new theme, you can achieve the requirement in any theme without writing any code.
All SliderVilla sliders come with category specific slider embed option such as shortcode, template tag and widget. Using any of these methods, you can easily embed category specific slider anywhere on your site.
For example, to have category specific Pinwheel Slider on a particular page or say. Homepage, you can use the shortcode as,
The above shortcode will embed a Pinwheel Slider with auto fetched recent articles from category named ‘Sports’. You can customize the settings e.g. width, height, image size ratio, font color, font sizes and many more using dedicated settings panel. SliderVilla sliders allow to have multiple sliders on single page as well. Which means you can have as many category specific Pinwheel sliders as you want on a single page.
Auto Detect Category
Well, in above example I mentioned the category name as ‘Sports’ but if you like to show a category specific slider on all category archive pages, then here is way to achieve that. If you want the slider in a widget ready area, you can drag and drop Pinwheel Category Slider widget in the widget ready area and do not select the category name. In that case, the slider will show recent articles from the category of the current page. Yes, it will auto detect the category and show the slides from that category only. You can also use template tag for this purpose if the area is not widget ready.
In the above template tag you can see that I have not mentioned any category name or slug. Now this embed code will show a Pinwheel Slider with slides from the current page’s category.
In SliderVilla sliders, there is another parameter named offset to skip first few articles to add in the slider. For example, if you want to show article number 6 – 12 in the slider, you can use offset=”5″ as a shortcode, template tag parameter and skip first 5 articles. So if you want to show older articles in the slider from Sports category, use a shortcode like,
[pinwheelcategory catg_slug="sports" offset="5"]
This feature is available in all SliderVilla sliders, checkout our 15+ premium WordPress sliders and powerful add-ons. If you want to have articles from more than one category or from some custom post type category, use our Taxonomy Add-on along with the slider.
Looking forward to see SliderVilla sliders running on your sites.
SmugMug is a popular photo sharing portal and website builder application where one can store and showcase photo galleries. The product itself is really good but when it comes to the user who are also having a WordPress based blog or other site, it becomes difficult to bring those photos to the blog. SliderVilla Sliders are capable of showcasing SmugMug Photo Galleries using the RSS Feed of the gallery itself. Our sliders bridges the gap between these two awesome platform and allow you to showcase the SmugMug gallery on your WordPress blog using the best responsive slider designs of SliderVilla WordPress slider plugins and our powerful RSS Feed Add-on.
First of all you need to get the RSS Feed of your personal gallery on SmugMug To do that just scroll down to the bottom of the page on SmugMug site and there you can see a symbol or Feed. From there you can select either RSS or Atom Feed. The slider add-on works with both type of feed but I prefer RSS format.
You need have RSS Feed Add-on plugin installed on your WordPress and choose between any of our 18 different slider plugins. Once you have both of these two plugins installed on your WordPress blog, use the shortcode as below to have the slider of your SmugMug Photo Gallery.
In the above example, I have shown the demo of Foto Slider. You can mention the name of any of our slider plugin in the shortcode and get SmugMug gallery with that particular slider. The only requirement is to have that slider plugin installed and active on your WordPress site. YOu can control height, width, effects and the complete look of the slider from its settings page.
RSS Feed Add-on along with any SliderVilla Slider plugin can embed a slider with images from Flickr, 500px etc. You can also embed a slider of recent articles from websites like CNN, Mashable, NY Times etc. and from all the websites which are having RSS or atom feed. Apart from the regular fonts, now you can use Google Web Fonts in SliderVilla slider plugins†. Using the dedicated settings page of the slider, you can apply any Google Font to Slide Title, Slide Content and Slider Title texts. Here is a video showing how to use Google Fonts in Pinwheel Slider. By following the similar steps, you can apply Google fonts in other sliders as well.
Apply Google Font “Yanone Kaffeesatz” on Slider Title of Pinwheel
Click on the “Quick use” button available on the font page, a new window will open with instructions on using the font
Scroll down a little. In section “Add this code to your website”, you can see the name of the font in the URL. In this example, the name is “Yanone+Kaffeesatz”. Copy this name and paste it in the “Slider Title” section under Slider Content tab of Pinwheel Slider settings page
On the Quick Use page, another font is also mentioned in case the Google Font doesn’t work. In case of “Yanone+Kaffeesatz”, the next font family is “sans-serif” (mentioned in the “Integrate the fonts into your CSS” section). Now select “sans-serif” font family in the drop-down for fonts in the “Slider Title” section under Slider Content tab of Pinwheel Slider settings page
Save the changes
† Google Web Font option is currently available in selected SliderVilla Sliders. It is expected to complete the rollout of this feature in all sliders by end of this month.
